Word and/or your Mac have been working overtime.How much memory does your Mac have? Is the issue less common if no other programs are running & no other documents are open? If you haven't already done so I'd recommend using the procedure described here to clear up any font issues: I'm using 10.6.8 here, but if you're using a later version there could be some issues that have not yet been resolved - especially if there are a number of additional document windows and/or application windows Windowing conflict with your version of OS X.Similar behavior was common in earlier versions of Word 2011, but AFAIK the issue was resolved by updates. The updating referred to in an earlier reply.My thought is that whatever is causing the text to change is what is also responsible for the crashes. Not only has Word not crashed, but there is no suggestion of the document text 'transforming' into symbols. Additionally, in its lower right corner the Comment gains a capsular button containing an ellipsis. What happens here is that once a Comment exceeds a certain length the Review Pane automatically opens I've also done additional editing of both content & comments.
Have instances where commented content over laps areas where other comments have been inserted. There are as many as 4 such Comments on the same page.
I have a ~40 page document into which I've inserted 9 Comments, all of which are extensive. What I'm finding is that Word 2011 doesn't automatically crash just because a Comment is lengthy. However, I've done a bit of playing around here. FWIW - I must say that I've never has occasion to use Comments that even approximate the length you're describing, so I can't speak from real personal experience.
